What To Do Before We Arrive
The minutes between your call and our arrival are when most of the damage happens. Here is what to do right now, depending on the situation.
Active water leak or burst pipe:
Shut off the main water valve to the house. In most Palo Alto homes, this is on the street-side exterior wall near the hose bib or in a valve box at the curb, and inn older Professorville and Crescent Park homes, it may be in a basement or crawlspace. Turn the valve clockwise until it stops, if you cannot find it or cannot turn it, shut off the water at the street using the meter valve, which requires a meter key but can sometimes be turned by hand in an emergency.
Water heater leaking:
Shut off the cold water supply valve on top of the tank, then turn the unit off. For gas water heaters, turn the gas control valve to the off position. For electric units, flip the dedicated breaker at your panel, and if the leak is at the bottom of the tank rather than a fitting, the tank itself has failed and will need replacement.
Sewer backup through a drain or toilet:
Stop using all water in the house immediately. Do not run the dishwasher, washing machine, or any fixture, keep family members and pets away from contaminated areas, and open windows for ventilation if the smell is strong.
Suspected gas leak:
Leave the house immediately, do not flip light switches, use phones inside the house, or light anything. Once outside, call PG&E at
1-800-743-5000 first, then call us.
How Fast We Reach Palo Alto
Our headquarters is at 228 San Jose Ave near Willow Glen, right off 87 and 280. From there, most of Palo Alto is 25 to 40 minutes depending on the time of day and which route makes sense.
Via 101 North:
The fastest route to Midtown, Crescent Park, Old Palo Alto, and East Palo Alto, typically 25 to 35 minutes off peak traffic. Avoid during morning commute windows when 101 slows between Mountain View and the University Avenue exit.
Via 280 North:
The better option for Stanford, the Stanford Research Park area, Barron Park, and South Palo Alto. 280 North runs 30 to 40 minutes most of the day, and has less weekend traffic than 101.
We prioritize active water intrusion and sewer backups above everything else, because every hour of water damage multiplies the restoration cost. If you are dealing with a burst copper line in a Palo Alto home with original hardwood floors, waiting even an extra hour can mean thousands in cupping and warping that could have been avoided.
What Emergency Service Covers
Our emergency response team handles:
Burst pipe repair:
Stopping the leak, assessing the damage, and making the repair on the first visit when parts are available. For slab leaks, we use acoustic leak detection and thermal imaging to pinpoint the source without exploratory demolition.
Sewer backup clearing:
Hydro jetting or cable snaking to clear the blockage, followed by camera inspection to identify whether you are dealing with roots, a collapse, or a belly in the line. We do not clear the line and disappear, we tell you what caused it and what your options are.
Water heater emergencies:
Tank failures, gas valve failures, and leaking fittings. We stock common tank sizes and carry replacement parts for the most common brands.
Main water line leaks:
Between the meter and the house is a frequent failure point in older Palo Alto homes. We locate the break and repair or replace the run as needed.
Active fixture leaks:
Failed shutoff valves, supply line bursts at toilets and sinks, leaking shower valves inside walls.
We do not offer free estimates, and we do not pretend pricing over the phone without seeing the job. What we do is tell you honestly what the problem is, what your options are, and what each option costs before any work starts.
What Counts As A Plumbing Emergency
Not every plumbing problem needs an emergency response. Here is what really warrants an emergency call.
Burst pipe or active leak:
Any visible water coming from a pipe, fitting, or wall cavity. This includes slab leaks, which often show up as warm spots on the floor, unexplained high water bills, or the sound of running water when nothing is on.
Sewer line backup:
Sewage coming up through a floor drain, shower, tub, or toilet means the main line is blocked or broken. This is both a health hazard and a property damage emergency.
Water heater failure with leak:
If water is pooling at the base of your tank, it has ruptured and will continue releasing water until it is shut off and drained.
No hot water in cold weather:
Usually not a middle-of-the-night emergency, but for families with infants, elderly residents, or anyone medically dependent on hot water, we treat it as one.
Overflowing toilet that will not stop:
Shut off the supply valve at the base, then call us.
Gas line leak:
Call PG&E first, then call us to handle the plumbing side once the gas is safe.
Main water line break:
If you can hear water running and your water bill is climbing but nothing in the house is on, you likely have a main line break between the meter and your home.

Neighborhoods We Serve in Palo Alto
Palo Alto has a wide mix of housing, and the plumbing emergencies we respond to tend to cluster by neighborhood and home age.
Professorville and Old Palo Alto (94301):
Homes here date to the 1890s through the 1930s, many with original or partially updated galvanized steel supply lines. Pinhole leaks, slab leaks in later additions, and main line failures are common. Cast iron drain stacks in these century-old homes are at the end of their service life and can crack or separate at joints without warning.
Crescent Park and Downtown North (94301):
A mix of pre-war Craftsman and post-war ranch homes. The older properties sit along streets like Hamilton and Kellogg near San Francisquito Creek, which has historically flooded during major storm events. Sewer laterals in this area are often original clay pipe with heavy root intrusion from the mature trees that define the neighborhood.
Midtown and Crescent Park (94303):
Mostly 1940s and 1950s ranch and Eichler-style homes. Slab leaks are the dominant emergency here. Many homes still have their original copper supply lines, which develop pinhole leaks after 60-plus years, especially in slab installations where the copper sits in contact with alkaline concrete.
South Palo Alto, Barron Park, and Greenmeadow (94306):
Home to some of the largest concentrations of authentic Joseph Eichler homes in the country, with neighborhoods like Greenmeadow, Fairmeadow, and Greer Park built on slab-on-grade foundations with in-floor radiant heating. When a radiant line or slab supply line fails in an Eichler, it is not a standard repair. The hydronic heating system, post-and-beam construction, and slab configuration all require a plumber who has actually worked on these homes. We have.
Stanford and Research Park area (94304 and 94305):
University housing, faculty homes, and the neighborhoods just west of El Camino. Many of these properties have long supply runs from the street, and pressure issues or main line failures are common. Stanford-owned housing often has specific contractor requirements, and we work within those protocols.
East Palo Alto (94303):
We also serve East Palo Alto for emergency calls. Much of East Palo Alto was developed in the 1950s through 1970s with galvanized supply lines that are now failing, and sewer lateral replacement is increasingly common as the original clay lines reach the end of their life.
FAQ
Do you charge extra for after-hours or weekend emergency calls?
After-hours, weekend, and holiday emergency calls are priced differently than standard business-hour service. When you call, our dispatcher will tell you the trip fee upfront so you know before we come out.
How fast can you actually get to my Palo Alto home?
From our Willow Glen headquarters, most Palo Alto addresses are a 25 to 40 minute drive depending on traffic and which part of town you are in. East Palo Alto and Midtown off 101 are usually the fastest reach. We will give you an honest arrival window when you call, not a fake promise.
What should I do if the water will not stop flowing?
Shut off the main water valve to the house. It is usually near the front of the property where the water line enters the house, or at the meter at the curb. If you cannot locate or turn it, call us immediately and we will walk you through it on the phone while our tech is en route.
Do you work on Eichler homes in South Palo Alto?
Yes. Eichler plumbing, especially the radiant heating slabs and the hot water distribution in post-and-beam construction, requires specific experience. We have repaired, replaced, and repiped Eichlers across Palo Alto, Mountain View, and Sunnyvale for years.
Will you work with my insurance after a water loss?
We do not bill insurance directly, but we document the cause of loss, provide detailed invoices, and work alongside your restoration contractor and adjuster. Most Palo Alto homeowners handle the claim directly with their carrier and we support that process with the paperwork they need.
